President Yoweri Museveni has lauded the late Eriya Kategaya as a true patriot who dedicated his life to the betterment of Uganda. Speaking at a memorial lecture held in Kampala, Museveni emphasized Kategaya’s unwavering commitment to national unity and development. He highlighted Kategaya’s instrumental role in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his intellectual contributions to shaping Uganda’s political landscape. The President urged Ugandans, especially the youth, to emulate Kategaya’s selfless service and dedication to the country. Several dignitaries and family members attended the lecture, honoring Kategaya’s legacy. The event served as a reminder of the values Kategaya stood for and their continued relevance in contemporary Uganda.

Kategaya’s Contribution to NRM

Eriya Kategaya, who served in various ministerial positions including First Deputy Prime Minister, was a key figure in the NRM’s rise to power. Museveni recalled Kategaya’s sharp intellect and his ability to articulate the NRM’s vision to the masses. He described Kategaya as a reliable comrade who always put the interests of Uganda first. Kategaya’s contributions extended beyond politics; he was also a strong advocate for education and economic empowerment.

Kategaya believed in a Uganda where all citizens had equal opportunities. His efforts towards promoting education, particularly in rural areas, have left a lasting impact. He championed policies aimed at reducing poverty and improving the livelihoods of ordinary Ugandans. The memorial lecture also showcased Kategaya’s writings and speeches, providing insights into his political philosophy.

A Champion of Unity

Museveni emphasized Kategaya’s dedication to national unity, a core principle of the NRM. He noted that Kategaya consistently worked to bridge divides and foster understanding among different ethnic groups in Uganda. Kategaya’s commitment to unity was evident in his efforts to promote dialogue and reconciliation.

He believed that a united Uganda was essential for achieving sustainable development. Kategaya often spoke against tribalism and sectarianism, warning of their potential to destabilize the country. His vision was of a Uganda where all citizens could coexist peacefully, irrespective of their background.

Museveni’s Call to the Youth

President Museveni used the occasion to challenge young Ugandans to embrace patriotism and contribute to the country’s progress. He urged them to learn from Kategaya’s example and dedicate themselves to serving Uganda. Museveni stressed the importance of education, hard work, and integrity in building a better future for the nation.

He encouraged the youth to actively participate in shaping Uganda’s destiny. Museveni pointed out the opportunities available in various sectors, including agriculture, technology, and entrepreneurship. He called on the youth to be innovative and to use their talents to create jobs and drive economic growth. The President reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting youth initiatives.

Reflections on Leadership

The memorial lecture provided an opportunity to reflect on the qualities of good leadership. Speakers at the event highlighted Kategaya’s integrity, humility, and commitment to serving the people. They emphasized the importance of leaders who prioritize the needs of their constituents over personal gain.

Kategaya’s life was a testament to the power of principled leadership. His example serves as an inspiration for current and future leaders in Uganda. The discussions underscored the need for ethical leadership and accountability in all spheres of public life. Good governance, it was noted, is crucial for achieving sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all Ugandans.

Legacy and Impact

Eriya Kategaya’s legacy continues to inspire Ugandans across various generations. His contributions to the NRM, his advocacy for unity, and his commitment to development have left an indelible mark on the country. The memorial lecture served as a reminder of the values he stood for and their enduring relevance in contemporary Uganda.

  • Kategaya’s emphasis on education remains crucial for Uganda’s future.
  • His commitment to national unity is more important than ever in a diverse society.
  • His dedication to selfless service serves as a model for aspiring leaders.

The event reinforced the importance of remembering and honoring those who have contributed to Uganda’s progress. It also highlighted the need for continued efforts to build a more united, prosperous, and equitable society, reflecting Kategaya’s vision for the nation. His principles remain a guiding light for Uganda as it navigates the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
