The family of Lawal Saliu, a 27-year-old businessman, is demanding a thorough investigation into his death following an incident in Kampala last week. Lawal reportedly died after an altercation with security personnel at a local entertainment venue. The family alleges foul play and claims that the initial police report doesn’t accurately reflect the events leading to his demise. They are calling on the Ugandan authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation. The case has sparked public outrage, with many Ugandans taking to social media to voice their concerns about police brutality and the need for justice.

The incident occurred on the night of October 26th at a popular bar in the Kololo area. According to witnesses, Lawal was involved in a heated argument with security guards after allegedly refusing to adhere to the bar’s closing time. The situation escalated, and Lawal was reportedly physically assaulted before being taken into custody. He was later pronounced dead at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Demands for Investigation

Lawal’s family has hired a prominent Kampala-based lawyer, Counsel Musa Ssekaana, to represent them in the case. Ssekaana has formally requested a detailed post-mortem report and access to all evidence related to the incident. The family is particularly concerned about inconsistencies in the police’s initial statements and the lack of clarity surrounding the exact cause of death. They are urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to personally oversee the investigation to ensure impartiality.

The police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, has stated that an internal investigation is underway. He assured the public that the police are committed to uncovering the truth and that any officers found culpable will face the full extent of the law. Enanga also appealed to witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.

Public Outcry and Social Media Reaction

The news of Lawal’s death has triggered widespread condemnation on social media platforms. Many Ugandans are using the hashtag #JusticeForLawal to express their anger and demand accountability. Activists and human rights organizations have also joined the call for a fair and transparent investigation. Concerns have been raised about the increasing number of alleged cases of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Uganda.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has announced that it will be independently monitoring the investigation. The UHRC chairperson, Mariam Wangadya, emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all citizens are protected from abuse of power. She also called on the government to invest in training and equipping law enforcement officers with the skills to handle conflict situations peacefully and professionally. The UHRC is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case.

Concerns About Police Conduct

This incident has reignited the debate about police conduct and accountability in Uganda. Critics argue that there is a culture of impunity within the police force, which allows officers to act with excessive force without fear of consequences. The government has been urged to implement reforms to address these issues, including strengthening internal oversight mechanisms and promoting community policing initiatives.

The Law Society of Uganda (LSU) has also weighed in on the matter, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation. The LSU president, Pheona Wall, stated that the organization is ready to provide legal support to the family and to monitor the progress of the investigation. She emphasized the importance of upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens, including the right to life and the right to a fair trial.

Calls for Reform and Accountability

The death of Lawal Saliu has highlighted the urgent need for police reform and greater accountability in Uganda. The family’s pursuit of justice, coupled with the widespread public outcry, is putting pressure on the authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. The outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for the future of police-community relations in the country.

The pressure is mounting on the Ugandan government to address the systemic issues within the police force and to ensure that those responsible for Lawal’s death are brought to justice. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens. The family and the Ugandan public await the findings of the investigation with bated breath, hoping for a resolution that brings closure and restores faith in the justice system.
